It matters. Are you a british citizen? If not, you might need a visa.

If you are a british citizen, you will need a valid passport which will not expire until at least six months after you have left the United States.

If your passport was issued after October 2005, it must have a digital photo (as opposed to a traditional photo which is simply laminated).

You will also need a return airline ticket.

All of this assumes you will be staying for less than 90 days on tourism. If you are going to study or work, than you will need a visa.

That would depend on what state and city you are going to be in. Yes a passport is the first thing but what about friends or family here (US)? Do you have connections here? You should be planning for this trip at least two to three months in advance. Do you research and be safe.
